The purpose of the SOAR program is to provide an opportunity for students to experience and participate in a rigorous two-year science research program.  Our program establishes a network of scientifically literate students with research experience, who serve as mentors for others. The SOAR students and their mentees work together on projects with the common goal of scientific research. As a result, they appreciate the fact that real science is not done in isolation, but as a group.  Students answer their own questions and expand their knowledge through library/internet research and experimentation. Our program uses a set of activities/labs that serve as the basis for student scientific inquiry.

To date, the Jim Hill program has served 538 students and received 120 Science Fair awards, participated in 16 community science forums, 8 American Heart Association Heart Walks, and 3 Keep Jackson Beautiful clean up campaigns.  In addition, 4 students have published articles  in the Mississippi Academy of Sciences Journal, 3 students have made presentations at the JSU CDC Epidemiology Symposium, 3 students have presented and participated in the School of Health Related Professions Day, and have had  4 students selected to participate in the International Science Fair.
